Five-Letter Words With the Most Vowels
Knowing the vowels early makes a five-letter puzzle much easier, because nearly every word is built around them. This guide lists the five-letter words with the most vowels and explains when they help.
Five-letter words with four vowels
Only 21 five-letter words have four vowels, most common first:
AUDIO and ADIEU are the ones most people know. QUEUE is the odd one out: it has four vowels but only two different ones, so it tells you less than it seems.
Everyday words with three different vowels
There are 437 five-letter words with three different vowels. These are the 110 everyday ones, most common first, with the top 36 shown:
Words like ABOUT, HOUSE, VOICE and RADIO are useful guesses because they test three vowels while still being likely answers.
Is a vowel-heavy first guess the best?
Not quite. Testing vowels is useful, but common consonants like R, S and T appear in more answers than U or I.
We measured how many letters each first guess is expected to reveal, using everyday five-letter words as the possible answers:
- AUDIO: 1.30 letters on average
- ADIEU: 1.49 letters on average
- AROSE: 1.96 letters on average
A word that mixes two or three vowels with common consonants finds more letters. See the best Wordle starting words for the full ranking.
AUDIO and ADIEU still have a place: they're a good second guess when your first word found no vowels.
Five-letter words with no vowels
A few five-letter words have no A, E, I, O or U, using Y instead:
If your guesses keep missing every vowel, the answer may be one of these. See words without vowels for the full list.
Tips for using vowels in Wordle
- Don't spend a guess on vowels you've ruled out. Each new guess should test fresh letters.
- Watch for double vowels. Answers like EERIE, QUEEN and FLOOD repeat a vowel, so a yellow E may appear twice.
- Use the clue pattern. Once you have a few green and yellow letters, the Wordle helper lists every word that still fits.
